Mass stranding of Velella jellyfish on the Mediterranean coast from the Costa Brava to at least La Manga in the Mar Menor, as well as the Balearic Islands.
Velella jellyfish, also known as "sailfish" or "seamen," are small marine organisms that live on the ocean's surface. They have a characteristic "sail-like" structure, thanks to which they move through the water under the influence of the wind. Although they may resemble jellyfish, Velella are actually hydrozoans.
These creatures are harmless to humans, as their stinging cells are not strong enough to penetrate the skin. They serve as food for sea turtles and other ocean inhabitants. Often, after a storm, these organisms gather in large groups and can be swept ashore by wind and currents, as has happened in recent days.
